Carry the Plank

June 23, 2007

Driving home tonight after a delicious meal, my daughter, spontaneous as ever, looks up at me and in her best pirate expression growls; “Arghh! I’m a pirate!”.

What followed was a conversation between a three-year-old pirate, her parrot Steve and me, her “Pirate Daddy”.

Zoe: Arggh! I’m a pirate. You are a pirate too.

Me: Avast, ye scurvy sea dog! Y’best walk the plank.

Zoe: Okay. Daddy, this plank is heavy. I can’t carry it.

Me: (laughing) I said walk the plank, not carry it.

Zoe: I put it down here. That was so heavy, Pirate Daddy.

Me: Shiver me timbers! Where be your parrot, Steve?

Zoe: He flewed away! In the sky. Argggh!

Me: Yar! Next time keep an eye on Steve. A pirate isn’t a pirate without his parrot.

Zoe: Hand me a map. We need to go there. (points) And where we’re there, we then go here.

Yeah. It’s no secret that I think Pirates are the cats pajamas. I think everyone has a extreme fascination with something, be it fantasy like Harry Potter or Star Wars or more historically based events like the World Wars.

I happen to think pirates rock (and I’m sure most of the general public do as well) because there’s such a dark, rich, magical, mysterious, treacherous and adventurous vein to pirate culture.

Plus, three-year-old pirates are just funny.

Reminds me of a similar in-car conversation with my 4-year-old daughter, driving through our village in mid-December admiring the Christmas lights:

Me: Look at that house!

Her: Aah, pretty.

Me: And look at that one.

Her: Aah, pretty.

Me: And there’s another one.

Her: Aah, pretty.

Me: That one has a skull-and-crossbones flag in the window!

Her: Argh, me hearties!

I think the kartooner.com readers collective is about to demand a picture or video of Zoe dressed in pirate garb, doing her best Jack Sparrow impersonation. Girl’s got talent, I tell ya :D

HAHA Pirate Daddy!

That’s something my daughter would say… Kids are a classic when they are that age.

Hey Kartooner!

That is so cute!!! The plank is too heavy? lol I miss my little babies. They are still fun at a much older age, but I really miss those days when we could just be silly with each other. I remember playing “pirates with my daughter when she was 4 or 5.

:O)
