As you might have heard through the Bonsai or through the blogosphere in general, Wordpress v1.5 has been released! This is a great day for many Wordpress users as Matt and team have added a slew of noteworthy features to this newest build, including but not limited to:
- Theme Manager — a robust and quite powerful editor for Wordpress themes. The advantage of using this is that you can easily package themes for GPL release.
- Brand-spanking new Dashboard — I like to call this the Wordpress hub. It includes built-in feeds for the Wordpress Development Blog and Planet Wordpress in addition to the latest activity for your blog (recent posts, comments, blog stats and incoming links).
- Restructured GUI — the whole backend has received a minor facelift but more importantly it’s been reorganized for ease of use.
- And other things including cleaner code (wasn’t it pretty clean already?), tweaks, etc. If you’re interested, Weblog Tools Collection covers the new features in more depth.
I’ve upgraded kartooner.com to use v1.5 which means you can expect a full design overhaul soon. If you’re running Wordpress (or not) and haven’t upgraded already, what are you waiting for?
Update: Not only did I upgrade the nightly version of Wordpress to v1.5 (Strayhorn), I also implemented Colin’s splendid Sidebar Tabs plugin in order to make use of efficient space. Grab it while it’s hot!
Hey, nice work on themeing your site. It’s based on Kubrick, right? But keeping it bare and simple makes it even greater. Now excuse me, I have to find a way to get 1.5 running on my hack-of-a-wordpress install. ;)
Markku: Yes, it’s a slightly modified version of Kubrick. I’m working on a new theme for this site, which should be unvieled soon. In the mean time I don’t mind using Kubrick as a temporary theme considering I wasn’t willing to port over my previous design to v1.5. :)
<Homer>Mmm… WordPress</Homer>
And to think my web hosting service offers one-click WordPress install. I’m still a bit reluctant to use it on my site (it’s taken me ages to build a Rube Goldberg-like, supercustomized CMS with MT) but I’ll certainly give it a shot on another planned project I have up my sleeve. Looks good.
Beto: I totally forgot about the 1-click install Wordpress script offered by Dreamhost. Thanks Alberto! I need to set up a testing bed for Wordpress to mess around with.. tinker here, there and everywhere. Mostly just to avoid looking like a complete “noobus” (yeah, I said noobus) to the rest of the CSS community.
Noobus is my name-o.
Upgrading to 1.5 was a cinch, and I like the idea of themes being in the wp-content/themes folder, makes it easier for future upgrades and installing new themes.
Well I bit the bullet and upgraded. And in doing so, forgot to back up my style sheet. YAY! Now I get to start all over…sigh…
I blame erik…
Scott: You’re welcome, glad I could help. :)
Those sidebar tabs are pretty swank, do they work on non-Kubrick themes too?
