Thoughts on The Village

August 19th, 2004 with 1 comment.

The Village [2004]I’ve seen every M. Night Shaymalan movie released. When I first saw The Sixth Sense the ending didn’t surprise me due to an “unnamed source” who revealed the twist to me before I even stepped foot in the theater. For me, if the ending is revealed beforehand, especially if it’s a twist ending, the movie loses its appeal.

Rather than letting the story develop and gradually let the ending reveal itself, I’m left with knowing whats to come and that ruins the experience. My wife, on the other hand, isn’t effected if the movie’s ending is spoiled. I’m pretty sure that she laughs at me behind my back and wonders why I care so much. “It’s just the ending, there is more to the movie than just the ending. There’s a beginning, you know?”, she might say.

Resurrecting the Dreamcast

August 17th, 2004 with 10 comments.

DreamcastA week or so ago, ebgames.com ran a special for a used Dreamcast console at the bargain price of $15.00 plus shipping. I felt this was a steal considering the fact my brother sold our original Dreamcast on Ebay without notifying me of his business ventures. Just as well, however, since we only owned two games for the system (Rayman 2 and Crazy Taxi) and chose to rent the rest at Blockbuster.

Shenmue (Dreamcast, 2000)One of my favorite rentals was Shenmue, a Japanese RPG by creator Yu Suzuki, mastermind behind the popular Virtua Fighter arcades. Shenmue’s premise is simple and yet brilliant in its execution.

The Joy of Reading

August 14th, 2004 with 10 comments.

Reading bookIf I’m not coding a web site, I’m reading a book. Reading puts me in a tranquil state of mind and for those few moments my imagination takes over, taking me somewhere I’ve never been and putting me in the shoes of a complete stranger. Ever since I was 4 years old I’ve never been reluctant to pick up a book that maybe I didn’t fully understand.

With book in hand, I could just scan the pages for words I recognized and maybe piece together the story. Also, ever since I enrolled in Children’s Literature in college it has sparked in me a new interest in reading children’s books, which at times feel more energetic than a run of the mill adult novel.

Blood Work

August 13th, 2004 with 11 comments.

After a 2 year hiatus from college, I will be returning next month to continue my studies, taking night courses to increase my credits and push my way towards graduating with my bachelors degree in Visual Communication. It’s been both a personal goal of mine and something my family supports to the upteenth percent. However, the process towards continuing my education has been interesting to say the least.
