The Garbage Pail Kids
The Garbage Pail Kids were the definitive gross out card set of the 80s. Every kid in the world at least owned one of these and some kids were fortunate enough to own the entire collection (which sells for top dollar on Ebay nowadays). They were undoubtedly a parody of Cabbage Patch Kids which in my opinion were more disturbing than the Garbage Pail Kids.
I remember thinking anyone who owned an entire collection was just plain cool. I, on the other hand, had only a few of which I “borrowed” from friends and forgot to give them back. Luckily they never appeared on my doorstep at 3 in the morning demanding their cards.
For the less fortunate who couldn’t barter with their parents to buy these cards they had to instead savour in the details from a friend. Looking over each of these cards you couldn’t help but feel that these cards were not only cool but at the same time creepy. Yet, that didn’t matter because Garbage Pail Kids were an awesome addition to your other 80s collections like He-Man, Battle Kats and the occassional Barbie you stole from your cousin to use as a torture victim in your toy escapades.
By the way, did you know that Topps has ressurrected the Garbage Pail Franchise?

This is the best post ever published. Erik, I commend you from bringing back fond memories. I was just talking to my co-workers last week about this movie. No one had a clue when I was trying to explain the movie. GPK is one of the only things I can remember from my childhood. Seriously.

Glad I could be of help in rejuvinating your past. As for my childhood I can remember not only the GPK movie, but Poprocks, Monsters in my Pocket, He-Man, GI Joes and a scary movie with Cher of which I can’t remember the title.

My cousins and I loved them so much when we were young, we took on names after them. “Chris Piss” was my moniker. Did anyone else do this?

Chris, I know just what you’re talking about. My cousins and I loved to pick on eachother and after the Garbage Pail Kids made their debut we called eachother various GPK-esque names.
I can’t think of any off the top of my head, but I do remember we had a GPK Club — no girls were allowed, naturally.

Thanks for the compliment, Erik. I was slowly evolving my site into what it is now. Sorry if I disappointed you ;).
Anyway, I wish I had a cool name like “Chris Piss” because I had to stick with “Egghead” all my life. They had to be quiet once I grew into it though.
