Special K
June 21, 2004
I had a few nicknames in High School and in College. Among them, my favorites were “Wonderbread” and “Special K”.
It was junior year, during Physical Education, when I was first deemed Wonderbread. During an exhaustive game of basketball with my buddies, a group of girls approached our court. There intent, while meger at best, was to steal the court and gain control of the hoop. We reacted indifferently about the situation, as you can imagine, and essentially backed them off the court. As they were walking away, one of the girls — the biggest of the bunch — turned in my direction and yelled, “Until next time, Wonderbread!”.
My buddies and I chuckled, then returned to the game. From that day on, however, I was known as “Wonderbread” and to this day the nickname rears its ugly face in family conversations.
My other nickname, Special K, was created sometime during my senior year of College. I can’t remember who thought of it first, but I do remember where it came from. The nickname acknowledges the ‘k’ in my first name. Most people, at that time anyways, were surprised to learn that my name (Erik) wasn’t spelled the conventional way; in this case: Eric with a ‘c’. The nickname, Special K, was the result of this different spelling.

Erik is the ‘default’ way if you will, of spelling the name in Scandinavia.

Seeing as though I’m 80% Scandinavian, it makes sense.
According to my father, I was named after Erik the Viking. If you ask my mother, as crazy as this might seem, she would say I was named after Chip’s Erik Estrada.
Frankly, I think being named after a hardcore Viking warrior feeds my dignity, more so than a burned-out 70’s star.

I’m sure it had nothing to do with your fondness for all night raves and cat tranquilizers *wink

Special K.…Wonderbread.…my favorite was ‘Air-Head’, but not because you forgot some things (like my tourist gifts from the Space needle) but because it was sort of like ‘Eri-Head’…short for Erik Head.
As for the Erik Estrada thing and your mother.…gezz, that’s the FIRST time I ever heard that, who would of thought it still possible to learn another ‘weird’ thing about your Mother (never ends)
Your nickname now should be AbaZoe.…‘Father of Zoe’…as the Arab’s would define.
My nickname for you now would be ” MR TALENT ”
Keep up the efforts, we love them.

Wonderbread. That’s pretty funny.
My nickname in high school was Whitesnake, as in David Coverdale’s long-haired band.
I’d walk through the halls and hear, “Hey, what’s going on, Whitesnake?” Or someone would mock-sing one of the Whitesnake songs (“Here we go again… on mah owwwnn.”) Kinda silly, now that I think about it. But, it stuck (until college). Always made me laugh, too.

Special K! Awesome! I always wanted a cool nickname. I just got called Coleman in college. It’s my last name so it’s not a big deal. Just that there were three Todds in one class and we sat right next to each other and that’s the only way the prof could tell us apart.

Actually, I too was referred to by my last name; Sagen. Countless amounts of times I felt like I was in the military. If it wasn’t Sagen, they called me Sega (based off the infamous Sega Genesis).
My classmates were clever.

Aren’t nicknames great? My last name is Cooper, and some people refer to me as “Coop”, which was my granddads nickname, so it holds memories, ya know? A few years back, I somehow earned the nickname “Super-Cooper”..I don’t quite know what I did that was so super, though. That one came in handy when looking for a TLD.….
And a comment from you Dad, very cool.

Heh. Over here I’m just Jarek. Simple and unique. OTOH I can’t pronounce Rs very well so a lot of people think it’s Jalek. Oh well. Close enough.
Back in Poland it was usually some short form of my last name… Piórek, Pióras, Jarek sometimes as well.

What about Ja-Lo?

HAHA you know what? im called special k too, just because i made a wrong…turn. I was off to someones house, and I rang the doorbell on the wrong house.. The people in the car waiting for me were laughing their arses off. i got back in the car and the first thing I hear, hence my name starting with a K, “Good Job Special K.” That got around, and pretty much everyone I know usually doesn’t refer to me using my real name.
Believe me, its still stuck to me.
But Wonderbread…thats an amazing nickname.
