Milestone: Categorization and Random Articles
June 4, 2004
Regular readers (all two or three of you) will notice that I’ve implemented a couple ‘noteworthy’ features on this site. The most notable feature, for me anyways, is the ‘Filed under’ (the default filing message for WP) subheader. Since porting this site over to WordPress I’ve been eager to categorize all 330+ entries into their respective category sections.
My initial thought was to add a section on the sidebar called, of all things, “Categories” and list the various categories for this site. However, after much thought and contemplation, I realized that Paul Griffin’s method was a better adaptation. He simply created a subheader under the main header for each article displaying where the article had been posted to. Granted, he also has a category list on his sidebar, but I felt that you could just as easily see my categories displayed both in the main index and in the individual archives.
I also included the article date and link to add your reply within the ‘Filed under’ subheader, which served its purpose in making the articles more readable, in my opinion.
Futhermore, I cleaned and spruced up the sidebar a bit with user-friendly and graphical tweaks. I moved the floating search box into the Archives section, which makes sense if you think about it, and added a ‘Completely Random’ section. This serves two functions; one, to make older articles more accessible to new readers and two, it keeps things fresh by randomly displaying articles from the database.
As the milliseconds, seconds, hours, days, weeks and months go by I’ll be adding other features (some invisible and others worth mentioning).

Nice little update. I’m definitely a fan of showing what category the post that your currently reading is in, so that’s good. I’ve opted, as you’ve seen, to have my featured categories (which I call features) on my frontpage, while leaving the rest of the category heirarchy on the Archives page for people to use as a filter or sort. Kinda like Jason Kottke, who has more categories than I do, but only has them on his archives page.
Nicely done. I enjoy your site. Perhaps one day I will get a few moments to make my site more pleasing to the eyes.

It’s an interesting concept Erik. I have been thinking on making something like that on my blog also, but decided to leave my categories on the sidebar. Just like Colin, i think it’s easy for people to use it as a filter. But maybe if i get 5 or more readers i might change it
